5 Scenic Lakes You Can Drive To in Montenegro

When people think about Montenegro, they usually imagine the Adriatic coast, Kotor Bay, or the dramatic mountain roads of Durmitor.

But hidden among those mountains are some truly spectacular lakes.

What makes Montenegro unique is that many of its most beautiful lakes can be reached without long hikes or complicated logistics. In fact, some of them are best experienced by motorcycle or by car, allowing you to enjoy not only the destination itself but also the journey getting there.

After years of exploring Montenegro’s roads and creating motorcycle tours across the country, these are five lakes I keep returning to again and again.

5. Lake Skadar – The Most Accessible

Lake Skadar is probably the most famous lake in Montenegro, and for good reason. Located between the Adriatic coast and Podgorica, it is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the country’s most important natural areas. What makes Lake Skadar special is its diversity. Rather than being a single destination, it is an entire region waiting to be explored.

You can spend hours riding or driving along the winding roads above the lake, stopping at viewpoints, traditional fishing villages, vineyards, and small local restaurants. The area forms part of Lake Skadar National Park and offers a completely different atmosphere compared to the busy coastal towns.

Despite being easy to reach, Lake Skadar still feels authentic and surprisingly peaceful.

4. Piva Lake – Montenegro’s Fjord

If there is one lake that surprises most visitors, it is Piva Lake. Located near the town of Plužine in northwestern Montenegro, Piva Lake is actually an artificial reservoir created after the construction of the Mratinje Dam. But don’t let the word “artificial” fool you.

The lake blends so naturally into the surrounding landscape that many people assume it has always been there.

What makes Piva Lake unforgettable is the road that follows it. For dozens of kilometers, the route winds through tunnels carved directly into the rock, crosses bridges, and reveals dramatic views of turquoise water surrounded by steep canyon walls. At times, the scenery feels more like Norway than the Balkans.

For anyone who enjoys scenic driving or motorcycle touring, Piva Lake is one of Montenegro’s must-visit destinations.

3. Kapetanovo Lake – A Different Montenegro

Kapetanovo Lake is where Montenegro starts to feel much larger than it actually is. Located on the Lukavica plateau between Nikšić and Žabljak, this lake is surrounded by vast mountain landscapes, open grasslands, and endless horizons. Getting there requires leaving the main roads behind and venturing deeper into the country’s interior.

The reward is a landscape that feels almost untouched. There are very few settlements, very little traffic, and often no mobile phone reception. The sense of remoteness is something increasingly rare in Europe.

For me, Kapetanovo Lake is less about the lake itself and more about the feeling of space and freedom that surrounds it. It is one of those places where you can spend hours simply enjoying the silence.

2. Bukumirsko Lake – The Hidden Adventure

If you’re looking for a destination that feels like a genuine adventure, Bukumirsko Lake is hard to beat. Located in the mountains northeast of Podgorica, the lake sits in a remote area surrounded by rugged peaks and dramatic scenery. The road is fully paved but demands attention. It is narrow, exposed in places, and requires careful riding or driving.

That challenge is exactly what makes the destination so rewarding.

As you climb higher into the mountains, civilization slowly disappears. The roads become quieter, the views become bigger, and eventually you arrive at a lake that feels hidden from the rest of the world.

Spring is arguably the best season to visit. Snow often remains on the surrounding peaks while the landscape below turns bright green, creating one of the most beautiful contrasts in Montenegro.

1. Sušičko Lake – The Lake That Disappears

My personal favorite is Sušičko Lake. Located deep within Durmitor National Park, this is one of the most unusual places in Montenegro. Unlike every other lake on this list, Sušičko Lake is seasonal.

During spring, melting snow from the surrounding mountains fills a natural basin and creates a stunning lake surrounded by meadows and mountain peaks. As summer progresses, the water gradually disappears until the lake eventually dries out completely.

In other words, if you visit at the wrong time of year, the lake may not be there at all. That temporary nature is what makes it special. You need to arrive at the right moment.

And when you do, the combination of the Durmitor landscape, the remote location, and the seasonal lake creates an experience that feels genuinely unique.

The Journey Matters

What all of these lakes have in common is not only their beauty. It’s the journey. The roads leading to them cross national parks, mountain highlands, remote valleys, and some of the most spectacular scenery Montenegro has to offer.

In many cases, the road itself becomes just as memorable as the destination. And perhaps that’s why I keep returning to these places year after year. Not only for the lakes themselves, but for everything that lies between them.
