New 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT First Look

When the new 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT lineup was unveiled in November 2024 at EICMA in Milan, Italy, it sparked mixed reactions among motorcycle enthusiasts. Much of the controversy centered on the bold new design. Many riders felt Yamaha had gone too far, particularly with the introduction of the matrix headlight system—claimed to be the first of its kind in motorcycle history. This new headlight setup takes up a significant portion of the bike’s front, replacing the familiar single-bulb design.

However, seeing the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT in person completely changed my perspective. The bike looks more refined and substantial, with greater presence and stance. And despite initial concerns, the lighting elements aren’t as visually intrusive as they appeared in photos.

Recently, I had the chance to test-ride the 2025 Tracer 9 GT here in the Balkans, under the real-world conditions we typically face. In this review, I’ll share what I liked about the bike, what’s new, and how it compares to the previous generation. It’s worth noting that the outgoing model (introduced in 2021) was already a well-rounded package, great for city riding, twisty mountain roads, and even two-up touring.

What’s New on the 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT?

The 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT brings more technology and a premium feel across the board—except perhaps for the somewhat untidy handlebar wiring. Yamaha is clearly positioning the new Tracer to compete head-to-head with European touring motorcycles, offering technology that would typically cost extra on German, Italian, or British bikes.

Design and Styling

The overall design has evolved. The new Tracer 9 GT looks more mature, with sharper lines and a cleaner aesthetic. The previous generation drew criticism for its “anime” or overly robotic style. In my view, this redesign is a noticeable improvement, with a focus on precision and modern appeal.

Matrix Headlight

The matrix headlight is one of the standout innovations on the 2025 Tracer 9 GT. Yamaha presents it as a first in motorcycle history, and I genuinely appreciate how it functions. Set it to automatic, and it adapts to your environment—whether you’re on a dark street or a highway lit by other vehicles. While the system isn’t flawless (I’d say it works perfectly about 85% of the time), it generally does a great job.

New Electric Windshield

The electric windshield is another new feature on the Tracer 9 GT. While the electric adjustment is convenient, the real benefit comes from its improved shape, offering better wind protection. The base Tracer 9 still uses a manual adjustment system, but provides similar protection—the main difference is the operation. Personally, I don’t find the electric system essential, but it’s a nice touch on this premium model.

Revised Electronic Suspension

The electronic suspension has been refined, delivering a more comfortable ride. There are several modes to choose from, but one thing that hasn’t improved is the seat comfort. Unfortunately, the seat remains firm, and after a couple of hours in the saddle, you’ll start to feel it.

Handling and Stability

A longer wheelbase gives the 2025 Tracer 9 GT added stability at higher speeds, though it’s slightly less flickable in tight corners compared to its predecessor. The difference isn’t huge, but it’s noticeable if you ride both bikes back-to-back.

Electronics Suite and Features

The 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT features a new TFT dash that allows easy bike setup and includes integrated Garmin navigation as standard. For a touring motorcycle designed to cover serious miles, this is a very welcome addition.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT represents a significant step forward in technology and touring capability. While some changes might not appeal to everyone, especially the bold front-end design, Yamaha has packed this model with features that touring riders will appreciate—often at a better value than its European competitors.
