Yamaha MT-07 or Tracer 7 – which one is a better choice?

Yamaha MT-07 Push

If you’re considering your first motorcycle or moving up to a middle-weight option, the Yamaha CP2 platform would be on the top of the list. Over the years, this platform has proven to be versatile, easy to ride, and simple to maintain, with models like the MT-07, Tracer 7, and Ténéré 700 (also known as T7).

For city use or road-focused adventures, the Yamaha MT-07 and Tracer 7 are popular choices. Many people ask me about these models on my channel, and I can see why. The MT-07 and Tracer 7 are quite similar, but the MT-07 is more affordable and one of Yamaha’s best-selling motorcycles. It has consistently been a top performer for almost a decade. It’s worth noting that the Tracer 7 may not be available in all countries, as it’s mainly targeted for the European market, where it is also produced, just like the Ténéré 700. There’s a reason for this, but I’ll explain more about it later.

Why is MT-07 a better choice?

When it comes to the MT name, there are probably few people who do not know what MT means. It is instantly associated with Yamaha, as the Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 are the most popular street bikes. Depending on the region, these bikes are best-selling motorcycles due to their fun riding experience, sportiness, and city riding comfort at the same time. They feature the most popular Yamaha engines ever built, such as the CP2 – parallel twin, and the thrilling triple CP3. The MT series combines the practicality of a city bike with the performance that Yamaha R series can offer. That’s why you can often see the MT-07 being used for track days, stunt riding, or practicing riding skills on gymkhana days.

Yamaha MT-07

In my opinion, the MT-07 is a great platform for those looking for a simple and affordable bike with significant potential for further modifications. Whether you are seeking a perfect track tool or a city commuter, this bike can be nimble, versatile, and bring a smile to your face every time you ride it, regardless of the conditions. This motorcycle is smaller than the Tracer 7 and is also suitable for shorter riders. In my video, I explain why I’d choose the MT-07 over the Tracer 7. You can watch it here.

I should also mention that the MT-07 is probably considered too simple by modern market standards. There are plenty of alternatives that offer a better package, but most of them will be hard to tune, which could affect reliability.

Tracer 7 could be a better all-round option!

When it comes to the Tracer 7, I would say it sits right in the middle of Yamaha’s lineup. Tracer bikes are known for their versatility and practicality. In Europe, they are positioned as sport-touring, but most people simply call them crossovers. The Tracer 7 is a lightweight sport tourer that is not intimidating to ride in traffic. The bike feels nimble and fun to ride on twisty roads; it is economical and suitable for two-up touring. This motorcycle is not available everywhere in the world as the MT-07.

When Yamaha was developing the motorcycle, they had the Alps or Dolomites in mind, which are the most famous locations for European and American travelers. These roads are renowned for their endless hairpin turns and winding roads, and that’s where the Tracer 7 shines. The motorcycle can be equipped with a set of luggage, has a number ofadjustments, and can be suited for any trip you might consider, whether it’s a weekend escape to the mountains or a week-long tour.

I personally would choose the Tracer 7 every time when I need only one motorcycle to do everything. You cannot go wrong with the Tracer 7. It costs just a bit more than the MT-07, but this is a completely different animal with a lot of capability for those who want to start travelling and exploring around. In my recent video, I actually tell you all about it.

Summary

If I want to summarize and simplify it, the MT-07 is for those looking for a basic platform that can be easily modified for sportier riding or used for daily commuting without any hassle. The Tracer 7 is a more serious bike with excellent hardware that can be used for exploring and travelling. Both bikes are great for city riding.

We have both bikes available for rental in Montenegro, but the Tracer 7 is also used for tours we organize around the Balkans.
